TASEK UTARA 1974: STUDENT-SQUATTER SOLIDARITY

4. While the absolute majority of PBMUM and PMIUM members are pro-people, some anti-people. fascists in these societies tried vainly to provoke racialism and communalism to divide the broad student masses.

5. In the struggle, student leaders under-rated the subversive role of the Special Branch. Special Branch infiltrations and subversions form part and parcel of the tactics of whole repressive state apparatus.

6. This struggle was a significant milestone in student efforts to support workers and peasants.

7. Despite the dirty tricks, students succeeded, to a certain extent, in supporting the squatters just struggle, to raise the consciousness of fellow students and to inspire the oppressed.

To struggle against an unjust, but nonetheless well-organised social order requires good organisation, patience and determination. Students should be vigilant, well-organised, have faith in the dauntless spirit of the masses, integrate with the masses, integrate theory with practice, and struggle bravely.

In so doing, we can definitely build a nation that is truly independent, progressive, democratic, sovereign and prosperous.

**PBMUM is the Malay acronym for the University of Malaya Malay Language Society, while the PMIUM is the University of Malaya Islamic Student Society.
